SCREENING AND STOPPING OF CHARGED-PARTICLES IN AN ELECTRON-GAS

A study has been done of the induced charge density, wake potential, a nd stopping power of swift unit charges, in an electron gas. An extend ed Thomas-Fermi theory is applied to the internal kinetic energy of th e Fermi fluid. The von Weizsacker parameter is constrained by the exac t Coulomb enhancement of the electron density at the projectile site. Illustrative results for protons and antiprotons are presented.
