We studied retrospectively 60 consecutive recipients of an implantable
cardioverter-defibrillator and identified 16 patients who were tempor
arily on and off beta-blockers (farther medication unchanged). An intr
aindividual analysis revealed that 56% of the patients experienced mor
e arrhythmic episodes during follow-up off beta-blockers compared to 4
4% while being on beta-blockers. Also, the mean episode frequency duri
ng follow-up time on and off beta-blockers was comparable (0.4+/-0.6 v
s. 0.51+/-0.5, ns). (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd All rights r
