Following the peace accords with Israel,Jordan's potential as a destin
ation increased significantly. Jordan consequently sought ach ice from
various international parries for developing tourism. However, almost
identical development plans designed years before by some of the same
parties remain unimplemented. This is because major responsibility li
es with the government and its personnel policies, taxation rates, mic
romanagement, and unreliable record keeping. However, beyond these pro
blems are issues having to do with guest/host relations, cultural valu
es, and the legacy elf over a half-century of wars and enmity toward t
hose who now compose a large portion of its market-the Israeli tourist
s. This paper discusses whether tourism in Jordan will he an economic
boon or a destabilizing factor.
