Abstract
SmS at a pressure of about 6 x 10(8) Pa undergoes a phase transition. A similar property is observed when Y is mixed with SmS (no external p ressure applied) at an Y concentration of 0.25. Various models are ava ilable to work out the lattice dynamics of the mixed system SmYS and h ere a simple virtual crystal approximation is attempted and the result s are compared with the experiments.
