Calculations of the time-dependent ionization in hot, dense plasmas on
ultra-short time scales indicate that highly ionized plasmas may be f
ormed in less than 100 fs. This has implications for the generation of
highly ionized plasmas with ultra-short laser pulses. The ionization
time is found to be inversely proportional to the plasma density.
