A general method of construction for dyadic Green functions is describ
ed by means of E-mode and H-mode decomposition for a planar multilayer
ed medium with open or closed uniform waveguide cross section in which
modal expansion is possible. Analysis by the equivalent transmission
line model in the propagation axis direction, as used in the construct
ion of the dyadic Green function in the plane wave spectral representa
tion by Barkeshli and Pathak, is applied to the general construction o
f dyadic Green function via the E-mode and H-mode decompositions by Fe
lsen and Marcuvitz, so that a dyadic Green function with a compact alg
ebraic representation is obtained. When the plane wave spectral functi
on is chosen as the mode function in the cross section in the present
construction method, the results of Barkeshli and Pathak are completel
y reproduced. The case in which the rectangular and circular waveguide
mode functions are chosen as the cross-sectional mode function is dis
cussed. Furthermore, the high frequency is applied to the dyadic Green
function for an infinite planar layered medium. It is shown that the
electromagnetic wave propagation in the medium can be described by fou
r vector rays. (C) 1998 Scripta Technica.
