Abstract
Nuclear power plants belonging to older generation can be backfitted t o the status of modern planes. Replacement of all materials susceptibl e to intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) ensures the integ rity of the primary system, prolongs inspection intervals, and opens u p the possibility to introduce the leak-before-break concept. Replacin g stellite surfaces by materials containing no cobalt will improve the dose rate and, consequently, the working environment. Reduced mainten ance cost and a higher capacity factor will enhance competitiveness.
