Experimental dependences of the dynamic viscosity of dielectric liquid
s on the applied voltage are considered. The experiment is remarkable
because of the elimination of the electric current through the liquid
in a series of measurements by insulating one of the electrodes from t
he liquid. The change in the viscosity of the liquid media can be a co
nsequence of alteration of the structure of the liquid and the formati
on of ion-molecule groups differing from the previously existing ones.
The variation of the mechanical properties of the medium with variati
on of the applied field strength points out the influence of charge fo
rmation on them. The dependences for polar and nonpolar liquids are co
nsidered. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics. [S1063-7842(98)00701
