The differential cross section for the nuclear beta-decay process indu
ced by Coulomb collisions involving a parent nucleus is calculated wit
hout invoking the Born approximation. The calculation have been perfor
med with the exact Coulomb functions describing the relative motion of
colliding particles. The mechanism relying on the collision-induced b
eta(-) decay of stable nuclei that belong to the main sequence is used
as a basis for explaining the formation of by-passed isotopes in stel
lar matter. The relative abundances calculated for by-passed isotopes
under the assumption of this mechanism comply well with experimental d
ata.
