Abstract
It is shown that the fraction of multiply charged metal ions generated in a vacuum are discharge plasma grows substantially in a high magnet ic field. This effect was observed for more than 30 different cathode materials. A relation is established between growth of the mean charge of the ions and increases in the burning voltage of the are. It is de monstrated that the burning voltage of the vacuum are can be ultimatel y increased to 160 V. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics. [S1063-7 842(98)00705-3].
