Balle et al., TREATMENT OF CHILDREN WITH SECRETORY OTITIS-MEDIA (SOM) WITH AMOXICILLIN AND CLAVULANIC ACID (SPEKTRAMOX(R)) OR PENICILLIN-V (PRIMCILLIN(R)) - BACTERIOLOGICAL FINDINGS IN THE NASOPHARYNX BEFORE AND AFTER TREATMENT, International journal of pediatric otorhinolaryngology, 45(1), 1998, pp. 77-82
A total of 386 children, aged 1-10, with secretory otitis media for at
least 3 months were randomly allocated to ?: or 4 weeks' treatment wi
th penicillin-V (Primcillin(R)) or amoxicillin + clavulanic acid (Spek
tramox(R)). Spektramox(R) was superior (p < 0.01) to Primcillin(R) in
eradicating Haemophilus influenzae and Branhamella catarrhalis from th
e nasopharynx. No difference was noted for Streptococcus pneumoniae an
d haemolytic streptococci, gr. A, B, C, G. No increase in the number o
f beta-lactamase-producing bacteria was noted after treatment. The nas
opharynx was recolonized with the same bacteria within 4 weeks from ce
ssation of treatment. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. All right
