In 19 of 61 patients subjected to coronary artery bypass surgery betwe
en September and December 1997 left internal mammary artery and left a
nterior descending artery were anastomosed on a beating heart without
cardiopulmonary bypass, Most of these patients had contraindications t
o conventional surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. Sternotomy was eve
ntually required in 1 patient while in other 18 patients operative cou
rse was uneventful.
