A NEW POTENT ANTIFUNGAL AGENT FROM ACTINOPLANES SP

A novel antifungal agent, Sch 56036 (1), was isolated from the ferment ation culture broth of an Actinoplanes sp. Structure elucidation of 1 was accomplished by the analysis of spectroscopic data. Compound 1 was identified as a new polycyclic xanthone. Biological evaluation of 1 i ndicated that the compound possesses broad spectrum antifungal activit y against various yeasts and dermatophytes with geometric mean MIC val ues ranging from 0.017 similar to 0.031 mu g/mL, respectively.
