A model is proposed for the ignition of a defect-density switching wav
e in a crystal by powerful laser pulses. It is shown that the switchin
g wave arises as a result of the nonlinear dependence of the activatio
n energy of the defect-formation process on the strain field due to de
fects. The conditions under which a switching wave arises and the prof
ile, velocity, and propagation direction of the wave are discussed. (C
