Abstract
The workings of a mode converter providing energy-effective conversion of an Hermite-Gaussian beam to a Laguerre-Gaussian beam and vice vers a are analyzed experimentally. The converter is an astigmatic Fourier transformer consisting of a system of two cylindrical lenses with perp endicular principal planes lying between two spherical lenses. It is s hown that this device is less sensitive to the mating of the astigmati c elements. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics.
