The propagation of long-range plasmons on a rippled metal film embedde
d in an insulator is studied. It is shown that the ripple of the film
leads to the appearance of additional dissipative losses of these plas
mons. It is established that these additional losses are caused by res
onant coupling between long-range and short-range plasmons produced by
the ripple of the film. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics. [S106
