Metastable, supersaturated alloys of the thermally immiscible systems
Ag/Fe (< 16 at% Ag) and In/Fe (< 50 at% In) were produced by pulsed la
ser deposition. The magnetic hyperfine interaction was studied via per
turbed angular correlation spectroscopy using implanted In-111 tracers
. In both systems the magnetic hyperfine fields B-n were found to decr
ease linearly with the number n of Ag or In neighbor atoms next to the
probe site (10.9% per Ag atom; 4.5% per In atom). From the observed d
istribution of the fractions f(n) in the laser-deposited samples, the
maximum solubility S = 15(5) at% of In in Fe was determined after lase
r deposition. This concentration compares well with the maximum solubi
lity S = 16(3) at% of Ag in Fe previously found for supersaturated Ag/
Fe alloys. The solubility of In in Fe in thermal equilibrium at room t
emperature and at 970-1370 K was determined for samples having In conc
entrations of less than 0.1-2.1 at%. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Al
