Je. Delery et Km. Kacmar, THE INFLUENCE OF APPLICANT AND INTERVIEWER CHARACTERISTICS ON THE USEOF IMPRESSION MANAGEMENT, Journal of applied social psychology, 28(18), 1998, pp. 1649-1669
This study investigated the relationship between characteristics of ap
plicants and interviewers, and type and amount of impression managemen
t (IM) used by applicants in the employment interview. Specifically, a
pplicant self-monitoring, self-esteem, locus of control, age, and trai
ning, and interviewer communication apprehension, interpersonal commun
ication skill, age, and experience all were expected to influence the
type and amount of IM behavior exhibited by applicants in the employme
nt interview. Data from 64 field interviews confirmed that characteris
tics of the interviewer and, to a lesser extent, characteristics of th
e applicants were related to the use of IM tactics by applicants.
