The problem of the propagation of a spatial soliton in a system of tun
neling-coupled optical waveguides is studied. The tunneling coupling c
oefficient is assumed to be modulated in a transverse direction. The a
diabatic dynamics is studied for the case of periodic modulation of th
e tunneling coupling coefficient. The stationary points for the beam p
arameters are found. The effective potential is calculated for the cen
ter of the beam in the equivalent-particle model. The condition for re
sonance emission of waves by a soliton is obtained. (C) 1998 American
