Haematococcus pluvialis FLOTOW emend. WILLE is a widely distributed al
ga inhabiting small astatic waters. The species appeared in large amou
nts spontaneously in a laboratory aquarium and in an Erlenmeyer-flask
filled with drinking water. The glassplates of the aquarium and the su
rface of the water were covered with a thick layer of immobile, spheri
cal, red cells (aplanospores). This paper presents hydrochemical data
as well as results of cultivation experiments performed in different m
edia (chemical solutions, filtered waste water and freshwater).
