Within the framework of monitoring the Danube river and its side arms
in 1994-1995, the species composition of phytoplankton and chlorophyll
-a concentrations were studied in some side arms along the Danube floo
dplain in Slovakia (river km 1840-1800). Altogether over 230 algal tax
a were identified, from which chlorophytes (111) and diatoms (73) repr
esented the largest proportions. Chlorococcalean algae (76 taxa) were
the major group of chlorophytes, namely in localities of Klucovecke si
de arm and Bodicke side arm. The phytoplankton communities in all the
side arms investigated were rather similar. The highest values of chlo
rophyll-a content were monitored in Bacianske (48.5 mu g.l(-1), Octobe
r 1995), Vojcianske (28 mu g.l(-1), July 1994) and Kluvcovecke (25.3 m
u g.l(-1), April 1994) side arms.
