Abstract
The vegetative morphology of the adult plant, chromatographic profiles of alkaloids, kauranoic glycosides and glycoresins; peridermic pigmen ts and root starch, were compared of varieties of Ipomoea batatas (L:) Lam., known in Mexico as red and ''camote''. The two varieties could be distinguished by their external morphology, chromatographic profile s of the alkaloids and glycoresins, peridermic pigments and amount of starch in the roots.
