Sc. Dinero, PLANNING IN A POST-NOMADIC BEDOUIN TOWN - AN UPDATE AND FOLLOW-UP ASSESSMENT OF DEVELOPMENT AND CHANGE IN SEGEV-SHALOM, ISRAEL, Scottish Geographical Magazine, 114(2), 1998, pp. 66-75
This paper provides a follow-up evaluation of the Israeli Government's
Negev Bedouin resettlement programme. Using survey data gathered in o
ne Bedouin town, the provision of public services is analysed and comp
ared with previous data, and the social and economic effects of resett
lement are addressed. It is concluded that although the programme is s
ucceeding in terms of encouraging urban relocation, the perpetuation o
f a top-down planning approach rather than a more popular-oriented str
ategy continues ot undermine the programme's development agenda.
