Abstract
Structures of beta-ZrNCl and superconducting Li0.16ZrNCl (T-c = 15 K) determined by powder neutron diffraction are found to be SmSI-type (R (3) over bar m) and YOF-type (R (3) over bar m), respectively. The str uctural transformation by Li intercalation is interpreted as the slidi ng of [ZrNCl](2) slabs due to an electrostatic force. ZrN bilayer in L i0.16ZrNCl forms almost flat double honeycomb lattice, in which ZrN sa tisfies an 'isosteric' principle with h-BN as AB/8e(-). (C) 1998 Elsev ier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
