Representative taxa of Australian freshwater amphipod families were ex
amined to determine the taxonomic significance of rugosities, microset
ae on the gnathopods and maxillipedal palps. Eighteen species of twelv
e genera in four families were examined with both light and scanning e
lectron microscopes. Unique palmate microsetae, rugosities, were found
to be specific to the Neoniphargidae Bousfield, 1977.
