Abstract
A 660nm resonant cavity light emitting diode was used to transmit an o ptical signal through a 30m long plastic optical fibre. To simulate a low-cost optical transmission system, the light was coupled directly f rom the device into the fibre and an Si-diode without additional ampli fication was used for detection. A 2(7)-1 pseudo-random bit stream was transmitted at a data rare of 250Mbit/s achieving a bit error rate of 3 x 10(-10).
