The course and causes of the emergency that took place in 1993 on the
sorption unit for production of ultrapure (PU)-P-238 at the Radioisoto
pe Plant, Mayak Production Association, are discussed. The thermal cal
culations and thermogravimetric studies of anion exchanger samples (no
nirradiated, irradiated, and saturated with plutonium) showed that the
emergency was due to draining of the liquid from the column and progr
essing thermochemical degradation of VP-1Ap anion exchanger.
