Purpose: This paper describes the establishment of programmes of rehab
ilitation education. Rehabilitation education has been a major but per
haps underlying factor in the disability movement around the world. Me
thod: The New Zealand effort to develop a rehabilitation education pro
gramme is examined, including history, early formation, structural arr
angements within the university setting, and relationship with the soc
iety. Results: Programme establishment is neither simple nor rapid, bu
t does offer rewards and ultimately, viable programmes that offer mean
ingful careers and direction. Conclusions: Maintaining the programmes
will require support by people with disabilities as well as profession
als and academics in allied areas.
