Hydrolytic degradation of flax and cotton cellulose in nitric acid solution
s is studied. The process is controlled by reagent diffusion inward the fib
er bulk. The activation energies for the process are 15 (cotton) and 30 (fl
ax) kcal/mol (3% acid solution), which are lower than that for pure cellulo
se. The reaction order is 0.5, which is inherent in diffusion-controlled pr
ocesses, and is independent of the acid concentration.
