The National Center for Health statistics estimates more than 300,000 indiv
iduals with major lower extremity amputation currently are living in the Un
ited States. Current healthcare climate mandates effective rehabilitation b
e provided in the most effective manner. An interdisciplinary amputee team
approach to rehabilitation with active participation of the patient should
be implemented early in the preamputation period to facilitate short hospit
al stays and earlier return to productivity with associated cost savings. T
his paper discusses preoperative assessment and education, postoperative in
tervention, and indications for inpatient rehabilitation, Gait training wit
h prosthesis in simple and complex environments, assistive devices needed f
or effective functioning at home, and prosthetic modification for participa
tion in recreational activities are reviewed along with issues related to v
ocational rehabilitation.
