The paper discusses a class of questions associated with the optical proper
ties of the main components of natural waters and with the analysis of the
brightness signal arising from the water, with a view to constructing algor
ithms for recovering water-quality parameters which would adequately reflec
t the formation of the optical characteristics of natural water tracts. The
paper studies possible ways of solving inverse problems, based both on the
construction of regression equations and on the use of complex non-paramet
ric algorithms. The conditions for their applicability are discussed with r
espect to the use of aerospace sensing data for water tracts of various typ
es.
