Comparison of the electro-optic (EO) effect between stoichiometric and cong
ruent lithium niobate (LiNbO3) crystals has been investigated using the Mac
h-Zehnder interferometer at 0.633 mu m wavelength. Anisotropic changes of E
O coefficients, r(33) and r(13), have been found between the stoichiometric
and congruent LiNbO3 crystals. The measured r(33) value in the stoichiomet
ric LiNbO3 is at least 20% larger than that of LiNbO3 with congruent compos
ition, whereas the r(13) coefficient of stoichiometric LiNbO3 is the same a
s that of congruent LiNbO3.
