Abstract
In a view of the dramatic changes in the healthcare system in the United St ates over the past 10 years, it must be frightening for the young endocrino logist about to embark on a career in private practice. There are many opti ons to consider, many financial obstacles to overcome, and many difficult d ecisions to be made, Many of these issues were not present 25 years ago. I attempt to describe situations that a young physician might not be aware of in evaluating clinical practice opportunities, including how to go about f inding a job. I review many of the problems that practicing endocrinologist s have in dealing with managed care. I try to make the readers aware that t he "business side" of private practice can be frustrating, but also rewardi ng, and try to provide guidelines on potential solutions to many of these p roblems.
