Abstract
Entropy generation due to natural convection has been calculated for three radii and a wide range of Rayleigh numbers for an isothermal cylinder. It w as predominantly caused by conduction. The viscous contribution was negligi ble. Locations of high local entropy generation were identified for differe nt configurations. The total entropy generation decreased with increasing c ylinder size for a given value of the Rayleigh number. (C) 1999 Elsevier Sc ience Ltd. All rights reserved.
