This paper presents a rime-domain BEM formulation applied to the solution o
f transient dynamic elastoplastic problems. The initial stress approach is
adopted to solve the elastoplastic problem. Linear time variation is assume
d for the displacements and initial stress components whereas traction comp
onents are assumed to have a constant time variation. Boundary discretizati
on employs linear elements and the part of the domain where plastic deforma
tion is expected to occur is discretized by employing linear triangular cel
ls. Time integrals are computed analytically, boundary integrals are comput
ed numerically and the domain integrals are computed by following a semi-an
alytical procedure. A numerical example is presented and the results are co
mpared with another BEM formulation. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rig
