The reaction of Fe(NO3)(3) . 9H(2)O with NalO(4) in aqueous acid solut
ion gave brown [Fe(4)l(3)O(24)H(15)] and subsequent reaction with conc
entrated alkalis formed M(n)[Fe(4)l(3)O(24)H(15-n)] (M = Li, Na, Kr Rb
or Cs). The crystal structure of K6Na2[Fe(4)l(3)O(24)H(7)]. 14H(2)O h
as been determined and shown to contain an Anderson-type anion compose
d of seven edge-linked octahedra. In the crystal, studied a central Fe
O6 group is surrounded by six disordered FeO6 and IO6 groups. All the
prepared salts have been shown to contain a similar anion based upon s
pectroscopic data. iron and iodine K-edge extended X-ray absorption fi
ne structure data, and the Fe-57 Mossbauer spectra.
