D. Calista et al., Resolution of disseminated molluscum contagiosum with Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy (HAART) in patients with AIDS, EUR J DERM, 9(3), 1999, pp. 211-213
Molluscum contagiosum (MC), a cutaneous infection caused by a DNA virus bel
onging to the poxvirus group, affects about 5-10% of patients with HIV dise
ase, often showing extensive, severe lesions, unresponsive to therapy [1].
During the follow-up of three patients with AIDS for MC recalcitrant to the
rapy, we noted their cutaneous lesions cleared 5-6 months after they had be
gun Highly Active Anti Retroviral Therapy (HAART). This therapy includes an
HIV protease inhibitor (indinavir) and two reverse transcriptase inhibitor
s [2, 3].
