Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is a frequent cause of orthopedic infections in human s. The bacterium expresses several adhesins that facilitate bacterial bindi ng to the bone matrix and to bone implant biomaterials coated with host pla sma constituents. The relevant S. aureus adhesins are termed microbial surf ace components recognizing adhesive matrix molecules (MSCRAMMs) and specifi c MSCRAMMs are involved in bone and joint infections.
