The compound (C32H16N8FeI)(2)I-2 is formed in the reaction of liquid 1,2-di
cyanobenzene in the presence of pure powder of iron and I-2. Raman spectra
and X-ray crystal structure analysis clearly shows that neutral diiodine mo
lecules exist as a bridge in the crystal structure. The Fe atom is five-coo
rdinate, having distorted square-pyramidal geometry. It lies 0.258(2) Angst
rom above the plane defined by the four N-isoindole atoms. (C) 1999 Elsevie
