The reaction of dialkylsulfides or sulfur dioxide with [Ru2Cl4(eta(3)-NN'N)
(2)(mu-N-2)] (1: NN'N = {2,6-(Me2NCH2)(2)C5H3N}) leads to the formation of
mononuclear complexes of the general formula [RuCl2(eta(3)-NN'N)(eta(1)-SR2
)] (SR2 = SMe2, SEt2, C4H8S, SO2). Related dialkyldisulfides and sterically
hindered sulfides or thiophenes do not react with 1 or form complicated mi
xtures of compounds. The X-ray crystal structure of the dimethylsulfide com
plex [RuCl2(eta(3)-NN'N)(2)(SMe2)], is reported. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science
