Abstract
This article presents an elastic-plastic finite element analysis of a crack in a strain hardening solid under gross yielding conditions. It is found t hat existing theories significantly underestimate the crack-tip opening dis placement One important implication of the present findings is that short f atigue crack growth models based on existing theories may be significantly nonconservative.
