A novel method of generating a rapidly renewable and reproducible polymer c
oated electrode surface is proposed. This involves in situ electropolymeriz
ation at a monomer modified carbon paste electrode. A carbon paste electrod
e bulk modified with 2-methyl-8-hydroxyquinoline was used to demonstrate th
is approach. The polymer modified carbon paste electrode obtained by electr
opolymerization was found to be useful for trace determination of Cu(II), i
nvolving preconcentration and anodic stripping procedures. It was also show
n that the polymer coated electrode surface could be renewed quickly and re
producibly after each determination. An optimized procedure was developed s
ubsequently for the determination of Cu(IT) and this was employed for the d
etermination of Cu(II) in a certified water quality control sample. Althoug
h the proposed method was demonstrated for Cu(II) determination, in princip
le, it can be more generally useful in applications involving polymer modif
ied electrodes. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
