Distils the views obtained from a number of conversations and interviews wi
th staff associated with CALICO (Cape Libraries Go-operative) and GAELIC (G
auteng and Environs Library Consortium) during a study visit in December 19
97. Notes the six library co-operatives in South Africa: FRELICO (Free Stat
e Library Go-operative); SEALS (South Eastern Academic Library System); CAT
NIP; EASEL (Eastern Seaboard Libraries); CALIGO; and GAELIC Presents two ca
se studies of CALICO and GAELIC focusing on: missions; structure and manage
ment; and activities. Concludes that CALICO and GAELIC and the other librar
y co-operatives and consortia in South Africa have been formed at a time wh
en the challenges facing the new South Africa and, in particular, higher ed
ucation in South Africa, are considerable. Their objectives and activities
reflect the issues facing the management of library resources in higher edu
cation in South Africa, including the increasing cost of periodical subscri
ptions leading library managers to seek collaborative acquisitions strategi
es and to consider the potential of electronic periodicals and other forms
of electronic document delivery.
