This paper describes recent developments in the processing of continuous fi
bre reinforced titanium alloy metal matrix composite. Used selectively, MMC
s can have a dramatic effect on performance and weight. They combine the ex
ceptional strength and stiffness of a ceramic with the many advantages of a
metal matrix. which include elevated temperature capability, impact resist
ance, and environmental stability. Titanium MMCs have passed through the in
itial material research stages and the basic mechanical performance criteri
a are now well established. Further progress towards commercial exploitatio
n now depends on detailed process definition and cost reduction. (C) 1999 E
