The confused history of the Zoopsidoideae is reviewed; it is shown that tax
a which fit in Zoopsis or Zoopsidella were previously assigned to the unrel
ated genera Alobiella, Cephalozia, Alobiellopsis, Regredicaulis, and Paracr
omastigum. Zoopsis is sharply separated from the immediately allied genera
(Zoopsidella, Pteropsiella, Monodactylopsis) by: prevalent terminal-lateral
branching of sterile plants; by a sera with many small inner rows surround
ed by a ring of eight cells, Zoopsis is monographed and shown to consist of
three subgenera: Eozoopsis Schust. [with Z. macrophylla Schust., Z. leitge
biana (Carr. & Pears.) Steph.], Amphizoopsis Schust. [with Z. ceratophylla
(Spr.) Schust.] and Zoopsis [with five species, Z. setigera Goebel, Z. setu
losa Leitg., Z. argentea (H.f. & T.) G.L. & N., Z, liukinensis Horik., and
Z. nitida Glenny, Braggins & Schust.] Within the genus a gradual reduction
of leaves (and underleaves) occurs from Z, macrophylla, in which many-celle
d appendages prevail, to Z. nitida, in which recognition of leaves is virtu
ally impossible and a vermiform gametophyte prevails.
