The Small angle TIle Calorimeter (STIC) provides calorimetric coverage in t
he very forward region of the DELPHI experiment at the CERN LEP collider. T
he structure of the calorimeters, built with a so-called "shashlik" techniq
ue, gives a perfectly hermetic calorimeter and still allows for the inserti
on of tracking detectors within the sampling structure to measure the direc
tion of the showering particle. A charged-particle veto system, composed of
two scintillator layers, makes it possible to trigger on single photon eve
nts and provides e-gamma separation. Results are presented from the extensi
ve studies of these detectors in the CERN testbeams prior of installation a
nd of the detector performance at LEP. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All r
