Abstract
The coordination and local order of vanadium(V) surface oxides on sili ca are examined by V-51 spin echo and MAS NMR, as well as by Raman spe ctroscopy. Comparison with corresponding data on two crystallographica lly characterized model compounds, [Ph3SiO]3VO and [(c-C6H11)7(Si7O12) VO]2, reveals unambiguously that the vanadia species found at the sili ca surface is a three-legged (SiO)3V=O unit. These results support the hypothesis that silsesquioxanes are appropriate model systems for hyd roxylated silica surfaces.
