Clear evidence of magnetic ordering at the Rh(100) surface has been obtaine
d by measuring the linear magnetic dichroism in the angular distribution of
the Rh-3d photoelectrons. The experiment is performed by reversing the ori
entation of the magnetic moments using an external magnetic field and obser
ving the difference in the core level line shape. Since the Rh-3d levels ex
hibit a clearly resolved surface component, it is possible to associate the
changes to magnetic ordering restricted to the surface layer.
