Children and adolescents are prone to avulsive injuries related to a combin
ation of their propensity for great strength, ability to sustain extreme le
vels of activity, and immature growing apophyses. Appropriate interpretatio
n of imaging studies showing chronic avulsive injuries is essential so that
the irregularity and periostitis that can be associated with chronic avuls
ions is not misinterpreted as probable malignancy. This article reviews the
chronic avulsive injuries of childhood.
