Gc. Alexander, Schools as communities: Purveyors of democratic values and the cornerstones of a public philosophy, SYST PR ACT, 12(2), 1999, pp. 183-193
Establishing interdependency and community among people may be the solution
to reestablishing or creating a tighter fabric of support for childrens' d
evelopment, for building cultural democracy and a democratic state. This pa
per attempts to create a bridge between education and the construction of s
ustainable democratic communities in education, as a basis for building a p
ublic philosophy. Ultimately sustainable democratic educational communities
may address the concerns of today and tomorrow and build sustainable democ
ratic communities in the larger global society.
